I just finished it - Lapham reminds me of Paine with his biting criticism of anti-democratic forces in our culture. And he's so very concise.Hume's Ghosthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13551684109760430351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11224468.post-1123991503043668792005-08-13T23:51:00.000-04:002005-08-13T23:51:00.000-04:00I ended up buying the issue of Harpers, by the way...I ended up buying the issue of Harpers, by the way.John Lombardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12959755263848992742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11224468.post-1123955387085115272005-08-13T13:49:00.000-04:002005-08-13T13:49:00.000-04:00Wow. The data for Truman is in fact a famous example of statistical bias where a magazine conducted a massive poll of their readers. But their readers were upper class and heavily slanted Republican -- Truman, a Democrat, won on the basis of the vote of the less well up. That anyone would cite the case of Truman to show Bush had won demonstrates a level of cynicism I can only imagine.John Lombardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12959755263848992742noreply@blogger.com
